I remember nights in Alma, where we first fell in love with the world. Us, in our tiny room with the dinky little hotplate, cooking ramen and hot dogs or whatever we could get at the grocery store for under a dollar. Deep, quiet evenings on the porch, swatting at fat bumbling June bugs and petting the neighborhood cat; talking about nothing, about everything, until the stars emerged one by one along the river in the night sky. We would make our way up to the highest point on School St. and lie down on the dusty gravel road to count satellites, searching for Aquila, slipping in and out of consciousness as the bright lights burned overhead.

At the first pink of dawn, we walk down to the pier to watch gruff, salt-weathered fishermen bring in the first catch of the day. I press my forehead against your bony shoulder, sighing softly, willing myself to sink into the warm silty sand along the shore. In a town where the dead outnumbered the living, I found peace of mind.

  2. Liz Liz Liz Liz Liz you magical weaver of words, you master of light. You write the words that people want to have written about them. Together, your pictures and words are from another universe. Also the first picture made me think of a paper lantern from the lines created by the shadows. Awesome.

  3. Today, I too dreamt of small, sleepy towns and drives. It's been how long now? yet it still breaks my heart to remember jelly legs and bleeding hearts. <3

  4. I think this might be one of my favourite posts ever of you. I love how you've taken us in with the story like almost as if we could hear, see or feel what it was like then and there. Also, these pictures are very stunning.

  8. There's always that piece of advice that writers are given--"show, don't tell." Well, my friend, you definitely do both, and your words always have emotion behind them. I could actually picture myself in this scenario.

  10. Beautiful words, and beautiful photos. Reminds me of the days when me and my boy had nothing but still saw the world with child's eyes of wonder. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
